What Skylight Calendar does

Skylight Calendar is a dedicated touchscreen display — 15" or 27" — that you mount on a wall and leave on all day. It shows your family's shared calendar, chore assignments, meal plan, and today's weather. Family members can tap to mark chores complete. It syncs with Google Calendar, iCloud, Outlook, and Cozi.

It's a genuinely useful product. The dedicated display means it's always visible without competing with what's on TV, and the touchscreen is convenient. Hardware costs $280 (15") or $600 (27"), with the first month free and then $79/year to keep the cloud sync and features active.

What Family Check-In does on your Roku

Family Check-In runs on any Roku device — Roku TV, Roku Streaming Stick, Roku Ultra — and turns your existing TV into a family chore tracker and calendar display. It syncs directly with Google Calendar: create a chore event and tag it with a name in brackets ("Take out trash [Dad]"), and it appears in that person's column on the TV.

What about Mango Display?

Mango Display is a popular software alternative to Skylight — it turns a Fire TV Stick, iPad, Samsung TV, or Android tablet into a family calendar display. It's a solid product, but Mango Display does not support Roku. If you own a Roku TV and search for Mango Display, you'll find a dead end.

Frequently asked questions

Does Family Check-In work on any Roku?

Yes — any Roku TV, Roku Streaming Stick, Roku Ultra, or other Roku device. If it runs Roku OS, it runs Family Check-In.

Does it work with iCloud or Outlook calendars?

Not currently — Family Check-In syncs with Google Calendar only. If your family uses iCloud or Outlook as your primary calendar, Skylight, Cozyla, or another product may be a better fit.

How does the free trial work?

Install the app from the Roku Channel Store and start a 30-day free trial — no credit card required upfront. Billing goes through your Roku account after the trial ends. Cancel any time from your Roku account settings.

Can I still use my TV normally?

Yes. Family Check-In is a Roku channel like any other — switch to it when you want the dashboard, and switch away for TV, streaming, or anything else. It's not an always-on dedicated display like Skylight; it shares your TV. That's the tradeoff.

How do I set up chores in Google Calendar?

Create a recurring calendar event with the person's name in brackets: "Brush teeth [Emma]". The event's end time is when Family Check-In considers the chore due. See the setup guide for a full walkthrough.
